This well
established holiday town on the north east coast of Crete still has
much to offer, since it’s early days in the 60’s and 70’s it has
grown not only as a much loved resort town but also as the
administrative town within the province of Lasithi.
The town has much to recommend it with good shopping areas, and
excellent visitor/tourist areas. The area around the bottomless
inland lake, and the harbour is home to a wide range of Cafes Bars
and Restaurants catering to a wealth of tourists and holidaymakers,
as well as the substantial number of foreigners who year after year
choose to make their home, in this well loved town.
The town is well served by most forms of business, is the home for
all major banks and insurance companies, as the administrative area
it is also the home of local government planning, and a major tax
office. Agios Nikolaos has a good hospital and the area has many
good schools, offering kindergarten, primary, and secondary
education.
The area around the town offers much for the visitor, as well as the
usual sun sea and sand, there are opportunities to visit a range of
traditional inland villages such as Kritsa, Katharo, Avdeliakos,
Pirgos, or Kato Horio, which provide the opportunity to see parts of
Crete which have remained unchanged. Visits to places such as the
town of Neapoli which was the old administrative centre for Lassithi
and is still the home of the areas courts, can be a pleasant change
from the beach, this is also a good starting point for visits to the
Lassithi Plateau a traditional agricultural area famed for it’s
windmills some of which can still be seen today. Using a hire car
one can also visit a myriad of archeological sites, and places of
interest, as well as the abundance of churches, which contain so
much of the local history.
Those areas along the coast such as Ammoudara, Vathi, or Istron, are
the really popular areas and have grown in recent years, becoming
ideal places for development, with several prominent hotels and in
the past year a new resort hotel at Ammoudara the Blue Marine. With
government both national and local still development friendly the
area should continue to provide opportunities for those who wish to
invest, and maybe now would be a good time for the brave investor to
lead the way.
